It is pure chance as is the case with most hobbies that you end up with a collection- in this case candle holders. Having myself had an education in design where the words form, function and beauty are instilled into you; it is sometimes the humblest of attributes where all these terms become most manifest, the candle holder being an example.

Archaeological excavations have found clay candle holders dating from the fourth century B.C. in Egypt and excavations in Pompeii discovered several candelabra: The candle holder, the receptacle of light that through the ages has kept its function, even with the introduction and mass use of gas and electric lighting in the 19th and 20th centuries. The retention of the function of the candleholder even though its utilizable function can be considered obsolete can be attributed to the accompanying metaphysical traditions and symbols also associated with candle lighting. The form of the candle holder has been and is continually in development, with the introduction of new production methods, discovery of new materials, new processes and the changes in aesthetics and styles means there are is a scalar of candle holders out there, with varying characteristics all part of some type of story or history. Candlepower is a common term for describing light output. It is based on a measurement of the light produced by a pure spermaceti candle weighing one sixth of a pound, burning at a rate of 120 grams per hour. Spermaceti is found in the head of Sperm Whales, and was used to make candles in the past.

Candela.
The modern SI unit of luminous intensity, the candela, was based on an older unit called the candlepower, which represented the luminous intensity emitted by a candle made to particular specifications (a "standard candle"). The modern unit is defined in a more precise and repeatable way, but was chosen such that a candle's luminous intensity is still roughly one candela. A candle typically produces about 13 lumens of visible light and 40 watts of heat, although this can vary depending primarily on the characteristics of the candle wick. For comparison, note that a 40 watt incandescent light bulb produces approximately 500 lumens.
